Wilsonville High School football coach Doug Sommer resigned from his position last month, and said he appreciated the support he received during his four-year tenure.
Following four seasons as head coach of the Wilsonville High School football program, Doug Sommer resigned from his position effective Thursday, Jan. 21.
Sommer said he did not want to go into specifics but appreciated the support he received from those in the community.
“I would like to thank the coaches, players and community members who supported me and my program for four years,” Sommer said in a statement. “I am very proud of what we accomplished during that time. I wish the players and the program well as they move forward.”
After arriving from Milwaukie High School, Sommer went 24-19 overall and 14-12 during Northwest Oregon Conference play.
The Wildcats reached the Class 5A
state playoffs three out of the four years, including a semifinal appearance his first season.
In 2006, Wilsonville went 11-2 overall before falling to West Albany, 26-6, in the semifinals.
This past season, the Wildcats went 3-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play before falling to Ashland in a 16-14 heartbreaker in the first round.
The search for a new coach began immediately.
