The beat goes on.
The Wilsonville baseball team won for the 20th straight time on Tuesday, May 6, powering past Putnam 7-1 at Wilsonville High School to remain unbeaten in 2025.
“A lot of it is just playing free,” said Wilsonville senior right fielder Connor Johnston, who went 1 for 2 at the plate with a double, a steal and two runs scored. “We didn’t start off hot, but we attacked this guy and once we get one inning going, we’re just going to keep it going and put runs on them.”
“All year it’s been the fourth, fifth, sixth innings when we break out for multiple runs,” said senior center fielder Drew Hall, who went 0 for 3 with a walk and one run scored. “It was coming eventually once we chased the (starting) pitcher. “Once we get in that bullpen, (we’re) really dangerous.”
“We’re just trusting our guys,” said senior catcher Mark Wiepert, who went 1 for 3 at the plate and also walked once. “We know we’re going to come through. We know we’re going to find a way. We’re just trusting that.”
The Lions also benefited from the complete-game win by junior righthander Colby Kosderka, who threw seven innings and allowed just one unearned run on two hits and one walk while striking out five.
“I felt great, and the weather helps. Warming up is a lot easier and it’s just a big confidence booster,” Kosderka said. “I was just attacking hitters. Like I say, we’ve got the best defense in the state and I just trust those guys. It just allows me to attack hitters and let those guys work.”
With the win, the second-ranked Wildcats’ 20th straight, Wilsonville improved to 10-0 in Northwest Oregon Conference play and 20-0 overall. Next up, the Wildcats will play a non-league game at Aloha at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 8.
No. 18 Putnam, meanwhile, lost for the eighth straight time and fell to 0-8 in NWOC play and 7-12 overall.
Putnam took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Joseph Salvione led off with a single, moved up on Wilsonville’s lone error and scored on Calvin Booth’s sacrifice fly.
Undaunted, Wilsonville came back with single runs in the first and third innings, with Hall walking and scoring on sophomore Ben Wiepert’s sacrifice fly in the first, and Johnston walking, stealing second and scoring on a wild pitch in the third for a 2-1 edge.
The Wildcats then put the game away with a five-run fifth inning, an at-bat highlighted by Kosderka’s two-run single to center and freshman pinch hitter Beau Johnson’s two-run single to right.
