Those who walked through Town Center Park last week may have noticed a new mural being painted on the Wilsonville Parks & Recreation Administration Building.
The temporary mural, called “Celebrating In Every Color,” will honor Pride Month in June, with a reception and celebration being held from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. It will be the second Pride mural commissioned by the city, and this year it will feature LGBTQ+ people and couples across the building’s seven window panels. Each will be illustrated in a color of the rainbow, representing the Progress Pride flag.
Artist Daren Todd, who creates murals throughout the Portland area, wrote in an application for the project that the mural is meant to express “a vibrant and joyful celebration of queer love, identity and community.” The monochromatic illustrations aim to honor “the full diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community.”
“The design allows for light to come into the building and also invites people to pause, reflect and celebrate Pride in all its forms,” Todd stated in the application.
Wilsonville’s arts & culture program coordinator Erika Valentine said the artist selection process involved working with Portland Street Art Alliance, a nonprofit that facilitates art projects throughout the Portland area.
While last year the Arts, Culture and Heritage Commission issued a call for artists that only received two responses, Valentine said the nonprofit has an “extensive network” of artists and was able to provide a list of reputable artists they believed would “be a good fit” for the project. An original list of 10 artists was ultimately narrowed down to two, who both submitted a possible design.
The design that wasn’t chosen showed a park and nature scene that subtly depicted same-sex couples.
Todd will receive a $3,000 stipend for the project. Todd and the artist not selected for the project each received $500 for their proposed designs.
More information on Todd can be found on his website.
